Kurisumala Monastery

Established in the year 1958, Kurisumala monastery (otherwise called as Kurisumala Ashram) is the monastery present in the Syro- Malankara Catholic Church. Situated in Vagamon of Kottayam-Idukki district border, it derives its name from Malayalam words ‘Kurisu’ and ‘Mala’. The meaning of ‘Kurisu’ is a Cross and ‘ Mala’ is mountainous. This denotes the monk community who are leading a monastic life on the Mount of Cross in the hill ranges. Kurisumala lies at an elevation of around 4000 feet above sea level.
