Ponnani Juma Masjid

Ponnani Juma Masjid is located in Malappuram district, Kerala. Ponnani is nicknamed as the ‘Makkah of Kerala Muslims’. This mosque dates back to year 1510 and is constructed in the customary Kerala architecture. It was constructed by Zainudhin makhdum who was a Muslim religious leader.

About Ponnani Juma Masjid

The architect of this mosque was a Hindu artisan who was a close friend of Makhdum and was renowned as Ashaari. Subsequently he was converted to Islam and came to be known as Ashaari Thangal. The grave of Makhdum as well as the Ashari lies in this place. This mosque was a center of Islamic education for the Muslims in Kerala. This mosque was one time a center of Islamic learning for the Muslim community in Kerala. As per the notes of William Logan, (a historian) - in Malabar Manual, Juma Masjid was constructed in 925 Hijrah.
