Sree Mallikarjuna Temple in Kasaragod

One of the oldest and significant temples in Kasaragod, the Mallikarjuna temple is dedicated to lord Shiva known by the name Mallikarjuna. The temple is located in the heart of the Kasaragod town near the Taluk office. The Kumbala river flows close by to the south of the temple.

History of Mallikarjuna Temple

Mallikarjuna temple is at the center of the Kasargod town and is well known for a festival and musical theatre, Yakshagana. It is one of the oldest temples of Kerala and the major deity Lord Shiva is worshipped as Mallikarjuna. According to mythology, Arjuna decorated the figurine of Lord Shiva of this temple. The temple festival is held every year in the month of March or April. Throughout the five day long festival, numerous heritage programs is coordinated in the temple courtyard. On the last day of the carnival, Yakshagana is presented, which is the main highlight of the carnival. At the time of the carnival, Payasam were offered to all the visitors.
